The Food Event: Highlights

Los Angeles magazine’s Food Event is a bit of a mini-getaway, and part of the pleasure of going to this event is just getting there, the drive itself.

Coming from Santa Monica on a gorgeous Fall afternoon, I first get to drive with the beauty of the sun, sea, and sand along the PCH, and then the hills and canyons along Kanan Dume Road. This year, I was even lucky enough to be driven there in style in a spiffy convertible, living the iconic Calfornia life.

The afternoon fete on Sunday October 13 featured over forty of LA’s top  restaurants serving samples of their signature dishes.  And in case, you wanted to learn how to cook like the chefs, there were live cooking demonstrations from chefs Anne Conness of Jaffa, Brendan Collins of Fia, Vartan Abgaryan of Yours Truly, and Keith Corban of Alta Adams.

St. Germain served refreshing drinks in souvenir glasses that many took home.

Sponsors ratched up the fun.  Celebrity Cruises attracted crowds by holding raffles every hour, and having dance contests, where the last remaining dancers won prizes.

MedMen handed out tote bags with samples of non CBD gummies, and hosted a  popular, comfortable lounge that provided welcome shade, as well as a chance to  recharge between sessions of eating.

AirBnB had their own raffle to win a stay.  They also hosted a popular cactus potting workshop for which they even provided the materials – a ceramic pot, cactus, potting soil,  and decorative pebbles with which to top it off. They even provided boxes in which you could safely take it home to display in your living room and brag about your latest skills to visitors.

The Getty created a French cafe to announce their upcoming Manet exhibition and served macaroons along with chocolate strawberries inspired by Manet’s painting of a bowl of strawberries.  The cafe proved to be a popular selfie spot.

Infiniti showcased current models that also provided popular backdrops for selfies.
