Synapse Dance Theater

Synapse Dance Theater will present a program of new work at the Broad Stage. The concert repertory includes modern dance, contemporary jazz, hip-hop, movement theater and mixed media.

The program will feature works by Synapse Artistic Director Linda Gold, as well as guest and faculty artists Russell Scott Conte, Maria Gillespie, Denise Leitner, Marvin Mallori, Karen McDonald, Michael Owens, Roberta Wolin-Tupas, Gary Vaughn, and Kindra Windish. Also creating new repertory are Synapse choreographers Mayuri Bhandari, Sashoy Blake, Jennifer Campos, Aubree Fullwood, Jamie Quinn Harris, Robert Smith, and Stacey Strickland.

Among the pieces to be featured are:

 • “Tarpits,” a modern dance choreographed by Windish, a former SMC dance student, about how we become stuck in routines, rituals and habits. • “Jug Band,” Gold’s movement theater piece that addresses the collapse of a tight-knit community when one member leaves.

 • “Bump,” a modern dance piece choreographed by Conte. The piece reveals itself through dancers expressing themselves while remaining mindful of the group.

• “Expressions of the Subconscious,” choreographed by student Harris, who has studied classical ballet and jazz for 10 years. The dance is an expression and exploration of freedom influenced by music.

Founded 35 years ago, the student troupe has performed throughout the nation.

Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for SMC students and senior citizens. For tickets, go to www.smc.edu/eventsinfo or call (310) 434-3000.
