The 28th edition of PhotoLA will take place January 30 – February 2, featuring photography from over 60 local and international galleries, dealers, leading non-profit organizations, art schools, and global booksellers. 

International galleries from China, France, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary, Peru will present new, recent, and iconic works by photographers from across the globe. The show is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees from international art and photography community comprising collectors, curators, and art lovers. 

Highlights include Galerie XII (Los Angeles/Paris) presenting Norwegian Anja Niemi’s celebrated series She Could Have Been a Cowboy alongside the debut of her forthcoming monochromatic series The Blow.

Beijing-based artist Quentin Shih, one of China’s most celebrated contemporary photographers, will present his dramatic new series titled Familiars that explores memories from his youth with colored lighting, often red. 

Santa Fe’s Monroe Gallery of Photography will show photographs by the new wave of frontline photojournalists covering 21st century events. They include Ida Wyman whose work for Life, Look, and other magazines went unrecognized for decades. 

A special installation in conjunction with New York’s Danziger Gallery will showcase Paul Fusco’s critically acclaimed RFK Funeral Train series, representing the end of the hopes and dreams of the sixties, while celebrating the idealism and diversity of America. 

The 2020 programming  also offer lectures, panel discussions, special installations, and docent tours with leaders from the arts community.  Organized by Los Angeles based artist and curator Carter Mull, they explore a variety of topics including immigration, environmental issues, the history of Photoshop, collecting, and more. Also included is a panel discussion with curators from The J. Paul Getty Museum’s Department of Photographs, an artist featured in The Getty’s collection,  and another curator speaking on the making of art history and cultural legacies.  

An opening night preview on Thursday January 30 will benefit Venice Arts to further its mission of transforming the lives of Los Angeles low-income youth through photography and film education.

As the longest-running international photography fair on the West Coast, Photo LA has hosted over 700 galleries, private dealers, and publishers since its inception in 1992.
