Blue13 Dance Company will showcase its exuberant genre-bending artistry on Friday, February 21 and Saturday, February 22, 7:30 pm at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts’ Bram Goldsmith Theater.
The program includes two world premieres, both by the company’s Artistic Director and prolific choreographer Achinta S. McDaniel – F**k Fusion, and Terpsichore In Ghungroos. Translated as The Goddess of Dance in Indian Foot Bells, the latter number tackles issues of feminism and equality while celebrating joy and connection. The program is rounded out with the company’s previous works that include Diya aur Toofan – The Lamp and the Hurricane – also by McDaniel.
Blue13 draws its inspiration from the classical dance theatre styles of the Indian subcontinent, blending them with ballet, hip-hop, and other modern forms to create energetic, rhythmic and charged performances that are both contemporary and quintessentially American in their diversity and rebellion.
LA based Achinta McDaniel and Blue13 have been at the forefront of the city’s Bollywood dance and cultural scene for over 15 years. Their credits include choreography for Hollywood’s depiction of Bollywood dance in film and television. The company has performed nationally, taking their dance to stages in North Carolina and New York, and internationally to Canada, Paris and Morocco.
The dance programming of Wallis’ 2019/2020 season features Los Angeles-based companies exclusively, making it the first time a major Southern California performing arts venue has presented a 100% locally sourced dance line-up during a single season.
Dance @ The Wallis is sponsored, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
